“Exhibitions are all about identity, and Wesleyan is the kind of disciplined, well-coached team that forces you to show who you really are. We’re treating this as an opportunity to test our tempo, tighten our defensive rotations, and give our guys meaningful minutes. If we compete possession-to-possession and stay connected on both ends of the floor, we’ll learn exactly what we need before the season starts.”

“We’re extremely proud of the way our team competed tonight. Franklin Pierce is a tough, well-coached program, and they challenged us for all 40 minutes. This was the kind of game that demanded poise, toughness, and execution down the stretch, and our guys found a way to deliver.
Defensively, we made key stops when we needed them most, and offensively we showed great composure in the final possessions. Every player contributed—whether it showed up on the stat sheet or not—and that’s what made the difference in a tight 69–66 win. We obviously didn't shoot the ball well, 29.6% from three and 57.9% from the line. That needs to improve, but I have no doubts that it will.
We’ll enjoy this one, but we also know there’s plenty to learn from and improve on as we move forward. Tonight was a step in the right direction, and we’re excited to build on it.”

"We, as a coaching staff, look forward to rewarding the five young men that earned the title of a starter through all their work this offseason. With that being said, everyone in our program knows it takes the entire roster. There will be impact players that come off the bench all year. I believe these five give us the best chance to start strong tonight, but I do expect to play 10+ players in the game."

Exhibition Game vs. Franklin Pierce

Coach Smith:
Thanks, everyone, for being here. We’re excited to finally get on the court in a competitive setting. Exhibition games are always valuable because they give us a chance to evaluate our rotations, test our conditioning, and see how our guys execute under the lights. Franklin Pierce plays hard, they’re disciplined, and they’ll force us to communicate defensively. We’re looking forward to the challenge and to seeing our fans back in the building.

Reporter 1:
Coach, what are you hoping to learn about your team from this exhibition game?
Coach Smith:
The biggest thing is composure. We’ve been preaching poise and discipline all preseason. I want to see how our guys react when the game speeds up, when they’re tired, and when the opponents punch back. It’s also a chance for me to evaluate chemistry—who plays well together, who understands the system, and who still needs reps.

Reporter 2:
Any particular players you’re expecting to step up tomorrow?
Coach Smith:
I think we’ll see some energy from our newcomers. We’ve had a couple of freshmen and transfers who’ve looked sharp in practice. I don’t want to single anyone out yet—it’s still early—but I’m confident we’ll have a few guys make a strong first impression. In addition, I expect returners to display the growth they have made to their games in the offseason...

Reporter 3:
How much do you game-plan for an exhibition like this?
Coach Smith:
We keep it simple. We’ve watched some film on Franklin Pierce, but we’re mostly focused on our own habits. I want our team to run our sets cleanly, lock in on defense, and communicate. Exhibition games aren’t about out-scheming someone; they’re about building identity.

Reporter 4:
Franklin Pierce tends to play a smaller, quicker lineup. How does that influence your approach?
Coach Smith:
It actually helps us early on, because we’ll see pace. They push the ball well and they move shooters around the perimeter. Our defensive rotations will be tested, especially our ball-screen coverage. It’s the perfect early test because it forces our guys to talk and trust each other.

Reporter 5:
What’s the message to the team going into this one?
Coach Smith:
Play hard, play together, and play smart. Exhibition or not, we respect every opponent and we want to build good habits from day one. I tell the guys all the time—you don’t flip a switch. You build who you are every day.

Coach Smith:
We’re excited to get started. Our staff has been working hard, the players have been putting in the hours, and we’re ready to compete. Thanks again for being here, and we’ll see everyone tomorrow night.

For Immediate Release - Matt Seal was officially hired as an assistant coach for Bryant University Men's Basketball. Seal is replacing Jeffery Hadley, who left to pursue head coaching opportunities. Seal joins a great staff, that looks forward to leading Bryant in this new era for the university and program!
