Feb 21 2054: An open letter to Erwin May - by sparky on October 2nd, 2026

There is nothing wrong with being young and pensive, indulging in the sweet liberty of deliberation. Instead of rushing to a decision, the superior man consults the ancient books of wisdom, follows the cracks of oracle bones, and stares deeply into the cosmos at night. He can gaze for hours until the stars spell out the answer to the issue relentlessly pressing upon his mind. He wonders, as many Projected Height: 6' 9" high school centers before him have wondered: Am I good enough to play for MCLA? It is one thing to dwell on the exciting possibility of putting that magnificent MCLA jersey on for the first time. Oh, just imagine what the electrical surge flowing through your body will feel like once you are in the company of greats like Sid Matthews.

On the other hand, if you don't think in your heart of hearts that you are good enough to play at MCLA, nothing wrong with playing for some chump school.

Oct 25 2053: The Annual Beatdown of Whitman - by sparky on August 28th, 2026

Those in attendance at the Sherwood Athletic Center this afternoon witnessed a savage thrashing of their beloved Whitman basketball team at the hands of their vaunted superior opponent, The MCLA Trailblazers. This devastating attack on the self esteem of the Whitman fanbase will surely be remembered as a dark chapter for the college that certainly has had a lot of dark chapters... but I bet this dark chapter, replete with no-look passes, jaw-dropping dunks, and eye-popping ball handling on behalf of Jason Gilliland, who can-- GASP! dribble between his legs, will be extra dark, like that Hershey bar with no sugar in it. Something sweet was definitely missing from the arena today, as evidenced by the brutal manhandling home team mascot Whitty The Poet received from an incensed squadron of disappointed children. The churlish little scamps made off with his little doggerel-filled notebook and tossed it in the nearby Walla Walla River.

Mar 29 2053: Flustered Fledges - by sparky on August 19th, 2026

A week or so ago--I forget the exact day because it doesn't much matter, MCLA lost a meaningless game to a team called Eastminster, Missouri or something like that. Name's not really important in this story. Anyhow, after the game, in which we started a couple of RS FR who are essentially water boys, it came to our attention that our opponent's needed more than just a "W." They also indulged themselves with the oh so sweet fruits of mockery and lampooning.

Yes, you heard that right.

Mocking and lampooning the greatest program in conference VI.18 history. How did MCLA respond? With a shrug of the shoulders and an unstifled yawn. It was noted that our "rivals" were adorably thinking the Invitational Games were something to care about. Well then, if it's so exciting to you, maybe MCLA should thunder past this runner with the head start, and win the plastic 2053 Level 7 trophy.

Feb 13 2053: For MCLA It's a Miss on Bliss - by sparky on August 5th, 2026

The most heavily recruited high school player in MCLA's history has decided to play ball for BYU instead. The wooing of Cary Bliss, which began in earnest years ago and caused a regional shortage of manila envelopes in the process, apparently meant nothing to the youngster. Now for North Adams, which recently spent an untold, but clearly obscene, amount on new signs for Cary Bliss Blvd, the Cary Bliss Public Library, and Cary Bliss Little League Field, comes a sad reckoning. In this small municipality it is as though Jason Gililland's +9 strained groin is being felt by the entire community this morning. No doubt the prospect of tantalizing missionary trips to Uzbekistan played a key role in Bliss' decision. Montague, MA, Bliss' hometown, had recently become a hotbed of LDS missionary activity. Oddly though, on its streets today, there's not an Elder to be found.

Oct 08 2052: Whitman President Disappearance - by sparky on June 29th, 2026

The sudden disappearance of Whitman's president Playero71 has the Hardwood world buzzing. Gossip and intrigue abound. Just days away from the biggest rivalry in sports, Whitman v MCLA, the Whitman squad, giant underdogs, have gone bot. What kind of bot, who knows, but most likely one that relies on a server farm drinking up nearby Bennington Lake trying to figure out how to stop MCLA PF Arnie O'Dell. Rooting for a team like Whitman is like dumping toxic sludge on a playground or investing in Styrofoam. As such, every kind and decent person on the planet will be wearing an officially licensed MCLA T-shirt or cap before next week's game.

This rivalry doesn't even have a rival rivalry, because it's just that big and important, every other contest seems like a conversation between Trolley and King Friday XIII on Mr Rogers Neighborhood in comparison. Perhaps it was too much for Playero71 to handle.
