The conditions needed to produce a Top 25 team have been known for some time. However, exactly how to form a team to do this has never been verified, so there is room for debate.

Leading theories focus around separation from the defender on offense, and generation of a turnovers within a thunderstorm of defensive fury. Recent studies also indicate that IQ, length, and speed are essential to team development. Teams that fail to produce large quantities of these usually fail to produce a Top 25 team.

It took almost 51 seasons, but the Goldey Beacom Lightning finally found the formula to enter the Top 25, using a 12-0 start to finally convince pollsters. The defensive fury that has been the calling card for the Lightning in recent seasons has been paired up with just enough offensive flow to push these Lightning to heights never seen.


Oct 13 2046: A Storm Cloud Emerges over D1 - by El Jefe2 on July 31st, 2025

Tears flowed, not just in the locker room but throughout the greater Wilmington area. It was a day that not even the most optimistic fans of the Lightning were sure would ever come. It happened on the backs of a collective team effort that focused on fundamentals - stifling defense, quick hands, smart play, composed leadership. While no one individual could take all the credit, the performances of Benjamin Bills in the middle and draft pick Martin Luna at the point will never be forgotten and made it finally happen. After 46 seasons, Goldey Beacom has finally arrived in D1 for the first time.


Mar 12 2045: Lightning Strikes VI.17 - by El Jefe2 on May 23rd, 2025

For the first time since 2028, the Goldey Beacom Lightning are champions! The scrappy fundamentals squad thrashed Towson 72-29 in the VI.17 conference championship game for the program's 3rd overall trophy. The accompanying tournament appearance will also be Goldey's first since that 2028 season. Attendance is up, spirits are up, and the Lightning will look to strike again in the D3 National tournament

How has Goldey Beacom, with no guards who can shoot, and no big men who can score on the interior, ended up with the highest eFG% in VI.17? It's simple, until it's not. An emphasis on smart, speedy players who can do the fundamentals right has allowed the Lightning offense to space the floor and find the open shot. This unselfish form of basketball has started to pay dividends as the roster moves to it's upperclassmen years
